Integrated Training Sessions
The Conference Program includes the following training sessions. All sessions integrate FLOW-3D (x) instruction, helping attendees build more efficient simulation workflows.
Advanced Scalar and Dispersed Phase Modeling with FLOW-3D HYDRO: Theory, Practice, and Water Quality Applications
Instructors: Matteo Cesaratto, Technical Engineer and Developer and Dr. Dan Gessler, Global Water Infrastructure Lead
This training session combines a focused review of key scalar and dispersed phase models with detailed, hands-on modeling practices for two practical water quality applications.
The first part reviews the theory and implementation of scalar and dispersed phase models available in FLOW-3D HYDRO. Attendees will explore how FLOW-3D (x) can be used to quickly develop meaningful insights into model behavior, including parameter sensitivity and mesh convergence, to build a foundational understanding that allows users to produce defensible results even when using more complex models for sediment settling or bubbly flows. The second part details the specific considerations and hands-on practices that inform efficient, accurate modeling of flows subject to turbulent mixing. Two practical and timely applications are covered: contact tank analysis for drinking water treatment, and modeling of discharge plumes, a topic that extends across many water quality applications, from desalination outfalls to combined sewer overflow plumes and industrial facility discharges.
Drawing on validation work and best practice guidance, attendees will leave the training session with precise, hands-on steps that will ensure reliable results for future projects in these application areas.
Advanced Simulation Strategies with FLOW-3D CAST: Modeling, Optimization, and Data-Driven Insights
Instructors: Dr. Matthias Todte, Head of Support and Services and Florian Wirth, Sales & Support Engineer
This advanced training is designed for experienced FLOW-3D CAST users who want to deepen their simulation expertise and expand their analytical capabilities. The session focuses on sophisticated techniques in model setup, numerical simulation, and post-processing, enabling attendees to achieve more accurate and efficient results in complex casting scenarios. Attendees will explore best practices for advanced geometry preparation, meshing strategies, and solver configuration, including troubleshooting. Special emphasis is placed on using the full capabilities of the software, reducing computation time, and ensuring reliable interpretation of results.
The training also introduces data-driven approaches using FLOW-3D (x), including Design of Experiments (DoE), automated optimization workflows, and sensitivity analysis. Through practical, real-world examples, attendees will learn how to systematically evaluate process parameters, identify key influencing factors, and optimize casting performance.
By the end of the training, attendees will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to elevate their simulation workflows from standard application to a more strategic, insight-driven engineering process.
Best Practices for Efficient and Reliable Simulations in FLOW-3D WELD and FLOW-3D AM
Instructors: Tin Brdnik, Application Engineer and Dr. Marcin Serdeczny, Senior Applications Engineer
In laser melting simulations, accuracy and computational efficiency depend strongly on the appropriate selection of meshing strategies, physical models, and numerical settings. How should a simulation setup be chosen for a given application? Which modeling approaches provide reliable results and minimize computational times? How can repetitive simulation tasks be automated to support faster process development?
In this training session, attendees will work through practical modeling approaches and recommended workflows in FLOW-3D WELD and FLOW-3D AM using laser melting examples. The session will focus on the practical aspects of simulation setup, including mesh generation strategies, heat source definitions, material modeling, boundary conditions, and numerical settings. The training will also cover efficient post-processing workflows in FLOW-3D POST for structured evaluation of simulation results and comparison of process conditions. Attendees will also see how FLOW-3D (x) can be applied to automate simulation workflows, parameter studies, calibration tasks, and process map generation.
Based on practical application examples and validated workflows, the session aims to provide attendees with clear and applicable guidance for developing robust and efficient laser melting simulations for industrial and research applications.
